Filecoin’s Tuk Tuk upgrade boosts security, enables faster transactions, enhances smart contract functionality, and improves randomness access, making the network more secure, efficient, and user-friendly.

The Filecoin community has reached a new milestone with the release of Network v24, named "Tuk Tuk." This upgrade introduces significant improvements, enhancing security, performance, and usability across the network.

Here’s a look at what’s new, explained in simple terms so everyone—technical or not—can easily understand.

🚀 Key Enhancements in Tuk Tuk

1. FIP-0081: Strengthening Security

This upgrade strengthens the network’s security by requiring miners to stake a higher minimum amount through sector initial pledges. By increasing the commitment from miners, the network discourages malicious behavior and keeps everyone playing fair.

2. FIP-0094: Smarter Smart Contracts

The Filecoin Ethereum Virtual Machine (FEVM) now supports the MCOPY opcode, making it even more compatible with modern Solidity-based smart contracts. This enhancement unlocks more advanced decentralized applications (dApps) for the Filecoin ecosystem.

3. FIP-0095: Access to Reliable Randomness

Smart contracts can now directly access beacon digests from the chain’s history. This provides decentralized applications with a secure and verifiable source of randomness—perfect for applications like lotteries or randomized decision-making tools.

🗓️ Key Moments from the Upgrade

  • October 23, 2024: Calibration UpgradeThe network ran a test deployment to prepare for the full upgrade.

  • November 20, 2024: Mainnet UpgradeThe Tuk Tuk upgrade officially went live, introducing these enhancements to the entire Filecoin network.

January 2025: F3 Full Mainnet ActivationFollowing successful tests, F3 is expected to roll out network-wide, making transactions consistently fast for everyone.
